Video Editing is the process of modifying segments of video hots to form another piece of video. Editing is one the fundamental steps of the post production process. Other tasks include titling, color correction, sound mixing, and more.
The term "editing" involves the following:
1. Modifying sections of video and/or audio clips.
2. Applying color correction, fx filters, and sound filters.
3. Adding video transistions between clips.
The Purpose of Editing.
There are several reasons to edit a video and your editing techniques will depend on the situation. Before you begin a project, you must understand your editing goals.
Eliminate Unwanted Footage.
This is the most basic task of editing. Cutting out flawed or unwanted takes can significantly improve your video.
Select The Best Footage.
It's quite normal to shoot alot more footage than you actually need. Often you will shoot several takes of a shoot and choose the best one when editing.
Pacing and Creating A Flow.
The majority of videos serve a purpose such as telling a story or providing entertainment. Editing is one of the most important procedures in making sure the video is paced in manner that achieves this goal.
Add Visual Effects, Graphics, and Music.
This is often referred to as the fun part of editing. Great title designs and music integration can separate an amateur video from a masterpiece.
Set The Tone or Mood.
A talented editor will be able to create subtle changes in mood and atmosphere. The use of music, sound effects, and color can influence how an audience may respond.
Adding The Angle.
Video is a compelling format to express a viewpoint or message.
Stay tuned for Part 02 as we go into the details of the different types of video editing ...

Converting Digital Video Files
By Lorraine Grula
Converting Video with Stream Clip Software
I love digital video more than ice cream. BUT, incompatible digital video file formats can by a royal pain in the bazookie.
I heard from a reader the other day who bought a Sony HD video camera then was sorely disappointed to learn that the video format the camera recorded in was incompatible with video editing software. In other words, he could not capture the video he shot on his new camera into his video editing software.
This is a very common problem. He thought he had to run out and buy another camera, one that will record in a video editing friendly format. Not necessarily, I said.
Here's the deal. Many cameras today record in mpeg2 format. MPEG2 is a great format. It is what works with DVD players. When you rent a Hollywood movie from Blockbuster, it will be on a disc in MPEG2 format. Almost all commercial DVD discs are MPEG2 format, making it extremely common.
So naturally, MPEG2 does not work with most video editing software. It does not work on the internet.
Yup, a pain in the bazookie. Video camera manufacturers decided that more people were interested in playing their video on their home DVD unit than they were on editing their video on a computer. So, trying to please the masses, many camera manufacturers opted to record in MPEG 2 format. That way, you can immediately play the video disc you just shot in your DVD player. But you can not capture it in your computer and edit it. Incompatible digital video file format.
Conversion software to the rescue. Every software incompatibility has its corresponding software conversion fix. If you have MPEG2 video you need to convert in order to edit, you need some conversion software called Stream Clip. It is free. You can download it from the Squared 5 website. There are versions for both Mac and Windows.
Using stream clip is easy. You open the program, open your file, and then export it in any one of several formats. DV stream and quick time are probably your best bets for editing. AVI should work too.
When you open the MPEG2 files, you will notice that the video is distributed across multiple file folders. Open the VOB file, choose yes to opening all associated files, and then export it.
Stream clip also converts back into MPEG2 from any of the other formats.
So if you need to convert your video into a format compatible with editing, chances are good that stream clip is your answer.
If you are buying a new camera, keep this in mind. If you know you are going to be doing a lot of editing, make sure your new camera does not record in mpeg2 unless you do not mind converting it every single time.

Buying a Digital Camera with Video Capture Capability
By Jeremy Maddock
As digital cameras have developed and evolved over the past several years, one feature that has become almost universal is video capture. The ability to record simple movies is now available on virtually every new digital camera, but specific capabilities will vary greatly from one model to the next.
If you want to create movies with your camera, one important feature to consider is quality of video information recorded. This is made up of resolution and frames-per-second. It is important to note that the video resolution of a digital camera will usually be much lower than its image quality for normal photographs.
A move with high resolution and plenty of frames per second will look a lot nicer and more detailed on a computer screen, but will also use a lot more memory.
Another important feature to consider in the area of video capture, is whether your camera of choice supports sound. Some devices will feature a built-in microphone specifically to enhance this feature, but in many cases, you will need to attach some sort of external microphone if you want to record sound.
Other important components to look for in a digital camera are video length (how long a movie can it record?), video format (a standard and easy-to-edit format like MPEG is ideal), and zoom flexibility (can you zoom in on things while recording a video?).
It is a good idea to ask about all of these features before buying a new camera for its video capture capabilities.

How to Create a Video Biography
By Lisa Maxwell
Have you ever thought of making a video biography of your loved one before? Here are some tips on how to create your very own video biography:
Equipment Required:
• Camcorder with tripod and blank tape or disc
• Computer
• Movie Software
• DVD Burner
• DVD
Steps to Make Your Video Biography
1. Start out by forming a list of questions you'd like your loved one to talk about. Have her read it beforehand if she's nervous, or keep it till the last minute to get honest, uncanned answers. It's up to you.
2. Set up your camcorder on your tripod. Have only your subject in the frame. Keep her eyes in the first top third of the frame filling up a good portion of the screen with her face only. Start recording in SP mode. If you have a camcorder with a microphone jack use a lapel mic for better sound quality.
3. Sit opposite of each other and begin by having her state her full name and birth date. Start asking her your list of questions and having her answer them on tape. Try to keep your comments and laughter to a minimum as you will want only her voice to be heard.
4. Download your video tape or disc to your computer movie software. Open your movie software and edit your movie the way you want it.
5. Burn your finished video biography to a DVD and share with friends and family.
Voila! You have yourself a video biography.

Why Can't Good Video Software Be Free?
By Callie Richards
You can get a lot of decent pieces of software online, but none of them will do the work of a professional piece of software. You may wonder why there's not more quality software available for free. There are some good reasons for this.
Not all videos are created equally. If you've spent any amount of time trying to view videos online or trying to record your own videos with a digital video recorder, you've encountered the wide variety of digital formats that are available. There are dozens of formats and several of them that are popular, like avi, mpeg, wmv, mov, and flv.
What a lot of people don't realize is that each of these formats is packaged in another program, called a codec. Codecs are the packages that help facilitate the different software that allows you to view movies. Many of these codecs are patented. Each piece of video software is the result of a dedicated team of programmers and a company to back them up. Moreover, each video software creator has to pay royalties to the creator of the codecs in exchange for using the technology with their software.
When you download free video software, you are running the risk of two different things. The free software may not be as functional as paid software because the software uses royalty free codecs only. In the second case, the developers may be avoiding royalty fees and illegally distributing software that uses codecs subject to royalties.
Although free video software can allow you to save money, you're really wasting your time in one case or participating in theft in another. Most people don't want to be part of illegal activity while they are converting, editing, or otherwise processing video. Even if your free video software is legit, you won't be able to save, edit and convert all of the available video file types.
If you want to get the most out of your videos and be able to convert, rip, edit and burn videos in any format, you need a high quality video software package. The developers of Movavi VideoSuite remit all royalty payments to the right codec companies. This makes it a comprehensive and helpful program.
You can waste your time trying to get by with incomplete free video software, and potentially participating in a legal activity. Or you can pay for a quality software like Movavi VideoSuite and actually accomplish what you want to with your videos.

AVI Files: How to Convert AVI Video to Other Video Formats and DVD
By James Preston
The AVI video file format retains a sustained popularity unmatched by MPEG and probably will be a leading format for video file transfer across networks in the near future. As such, there is a wide availability of video editing and conversion tools for the AVI file format. Some of these tools are meant for professionals and some are meant for home users editing home video footage and personal movie collections. Listed below are a few AVI converter softwares, with brief descriptions and reviews.
The MovAVI VideoSuite is a full featured AVI video converter, which can take any common format and collection of video or movie files, convert them into AVI format and, if you so wish, burn them onto a DVD using an inbuilt DVD authoring tool.
AVS Video Tools is another alternative for converting your avi files to other popular formats such as MP4, MPEG, DVD, WMV, VOB, MOV and much more. It can burn your AVI files directly to a DVD, an iPod, a Zune or any other video device.
The Cucusoft Video Converter (Pro) is easy to use powerful and will quickly convert video files into AVI format. The default settings work fine, and will give you high quality AVI video, but if you need to adjust the settings, there is a professional DVD authoring engine built-in to allow you to set the specifications to your liking. Strong points are ease of use and high-speed real time conversion. Meaning that you can plug-in your portable video device and have a collection of AVI files on your PC with a few clicks and inside of a couple of minutes.
VirtualDub is an opensource video editing tool mainly used for and with AVI files. This versatile software will take any media format, allow you to scan through frames, edit the video, add effects and images, convert the video to AVI format and burn the finished product onto a DVD. It’s highly useful, totally free and easy to use. Recommended for all users.

Arranging Video Clips to Match Sound in Avid Xpress Pro
By Rambabu Dhanisetty
All right here it goes:
1. First, import and arrange the required audio and video files in the bin.
2. Edit your audio into timeline as per the requirement
Timeline
Now we'll have to arrange the video clips. You need not arrange them all one by one.... This tutorial is to eliminate that particular task. So, here goes the shortcut for that entire process.
3. Map the 'replace edit' and 'add edit' buttons to keys.
4. To do that, click the SETTINGS tab from Project window.
5. Double click the "KEYBOARD".
Virtual Keyboard
Now you get a virtual keyboard.
Then go to TOOLS menu and open command palette, (or press Ctrl+3). Then you should get the screen like this:
6. Now click on the EDIT tab from the Command palette, and click the "Button to Button reassignment" (the one on the bottom left of the Command Panel). That turns to Purple.
7. Click and Drag "REPLACE EDIT" button onto any key you desire... (in my case here, it is "Y" key).
8. Likewise, you also need to assign "ADD EDIT" button to some key also. (I've already assigned it to 'H' key in my case).
Now we've got "REPLACE EDIT" assigned to 'Y' key, and "ADD EDIT" to 'H' key.
9. Now press "ACTIVE PALETTE" (in the bottom middle). It turns to Purple now.
10. Now close both the "KEYBOARD" and the "COMMAND PALETTE" windows.
11. Now deselect only audio track. (By clicking on the name of the track).and select one video track where you want to edit your video segments. Here I've taken V1 track.
12. Listen to the audio track twice or thrice, to get an idea of the tempo.
13. Now is the time to add edit points on V1 filler.
14. Place the position indicator at the beginning of the track.
15. Play. And keep hitting "H" key (ADD EDIT), according to the beat. This creates edit points along the timeline.
Keep hitting "H" key
You should be able to see the black lines in the dark gray area (The V1 track).
16. Place your position indicator at the first edit point in the timeline.
17. Load your required footage into source monitor,
18. Move your position indicator to the point you want to edit (in the source monitor).
19. Now press "Y".
20. This will insert that particular clip's point into the Timeline; and it will be 'filled' until the next "EDIT POINT".
21. Now click on the Composer Window to activate and Press "S" Key from your keyboard, to send your position indicator to the Edit Point.
Composer Window
22. Repeat steps 18 through 20 until you 'fill' the required space on the timeline.
This is my finished project
Hope this tutorial was helpful.

All About Video Editing Software
By Roger King
Video editing software enables you to relive and enjoy your special moments caught on video and to share them with your family and friends. By using the latest in digital video technology, desktop video editing has become both simple to perform and popular. You can focus on the essence of your home videos and create a compelling and emotional story.
There are many video editing software packages available for editing video on your personal computer. Pc and Apple computers have low- end software that comes with their machines, pre installed with basic tools to capture and edit video footage. You can edit the video footage and play it back to tape or display the finished movie on your computer screen.
You will need a video capture card to transfer videos between your computer and camcorder or VCR. A video capture card should carry either analog or DV in/out, to digitize the video onto your hard drive. Most of the video captures cards are bundled with video editing software so you don't really need to buy software separately. More professional software can cost as much as $2000 and includes features such as high quality editing tools with a more powerful interface.
The capture process will create AVI on the PC or MOV on the Mac files on your hard disk. Once all your footage is on your machine, select the parts to use. Once you gain some experience and learn more about video editing, you can then consider upgrading to one of the higher priced video editing software packages.
